I knit and crochet. I sew and cook. I make all types of goods and I write about it here.

Our house was built on the cheap in the early 90’s and as a result, there are some aspects of it that are really, really hideous. Cheap off-white appliances. Low quality ecru carpet (mostly torn out now.) Wood veneer cabinets. And these amazingly horrible things:

The cheapest of the cheap, hollow wood closet doors in the variety of Ugly. In every room. We’ve torn a lot of them out but these, the biggest and most unsightly of them all, remained in my dine-in kitchen, separating off the washer and dryer. Yesterday I got out of bed, went into the kitchen to make my coffee, and decided I never wanted to see them again.
To replace them is a bit of an investment for a spur-of-the-moment decision so I went with paint. I had previously bought Martha Stewart’s kit of faux finishing tools, available here from Home Depot for $16.97, so I broke out the faux bois tools. I used a white interior paint leftover from another project and a roller to put on my base coat. I got the Behr faux finishing glaze and mixed it myself with some brown and white paints until I got the shade I wanted. The faux bois rocker worked like a charm. I think I will eventually buy some fancy glass Anthropologie knobs, but for now, I painted the ones I had robin’s egg blue with silver outer lining.

Now just to tear out the 90’s hunter green diamond flooring…
