Harvest Apple Butter
Faced with making an extremely large amount of apple butter for Regina’s autumn wedding and not being able to find a recipe, I decided to make my own. It had to be classic, but with a little extra “autumn” in the mix. After a few test batches, this was what we decided on.
20 large apples, peeled and finely chopped
4 cups sugar
4 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp ground nutmeg
1 tsp...

Baby's room bunting
Bunting banners are so whimsically adorable. I’ve been seeing them on the front page of etsy and they’ve been catching my eye for the past couple of months. I definitely think they are going to be the next big thing. When the string of white lights that we had up in the kids’ room burnt out and had to be replaced, the first thing that came to mind was a string of buntings...

Rainbow cake
Jude wanted to make me a rainbow birthday cake this year, and how could I say no to that? I saw something here on the craft magazine blog that made me think it would work, but I didn’t feel like making the cake from scratch so I changed it up a bit. I used two boxes of classic vanilla cake mix. Each layer was about 2 cups of batter, baked in a 9” round pan and colored with plain...

I spent almost all of my summer of 2010 working for a publisher to make simplified versions of some Yarnigans patterns for a book that would teach knitting to kids. That book is now available for pre-order here at Barnes and Noble.
Also, today is my birthday. Best birthday ever.

Some household crafting
Our house was built on the cheap in the early 90’s and as a result, there are some aspects of it that are really, really hideous. Cheap off-white appliances. Low quality ecru carpet (mostly torn out now.) Wood veneer cabinets. And these amazingly horrible things:
The cheapest of the cheap, hollow wood closet doors in the variety of Ugly. In every room. We’ve torn a lot of them...

My top 5 lessons I've learned as a professional...
I know I’ve been posting about this a lot, but I’m coming up on my five year anniversary of the opening of my shop at yarnigans.etsy.com. I’ve sort of been having the idea of doing this post for a while now, but I figured since it was a bit of an occasion (to me, anyway), I would go ahead and break out of my normal Yarnigans voice and say what I want to say. See, I’ve...

Happy May, everyone!
This May marks the five year anniversary of the opening of my etsy shop. I really can’t believe it’s been five years… I have been so incredibly lucky to be able to do what I love and share it with the world for so long.
For my anniversary celebration, I have decided to do a different promotion every week, for the entire month. This week (5/2 to 5/8)...

New patterns! Some books! Spring is here!
As usual, I’ve gotten terribly neglectful of the Yarnigans blog. BUT! There has been a lot going on in Yarnigans land, so I’ll try to catch you up.
I’ve put out two new patterns since my last real blog post, and I’m so excited about both of them. The first is Porter the Monkey, and he was a special request from my friend Jennifer, for her little boy’s...

Clothespin hat hanger
I know I haven’t put up any Yarnigans updates in a while, and it’s because I haven’t really been doing much Yarnigans work. I have a new baby, plus the 3-year-old to deal with, and it’s been crazy. I did want to share this cute project that the kid and I did yesterday, though—
We have a kids’ coat rack in our kitchen dining area, and it has been great for...

Merry Knitted Toy Trio
I actually managed to get this pattern finished and ready just in time for the holiday knitting season. They’re small, they’re easy, they’re versatile. Three mini dolls - a snowman, a gingerbread man, and an elf - they are just as well suited to be sturdy toys for little hands as they are to be gift-toppers or ornaments. I even had my Christmas tree ready for their photo...

Holiday Listings
It may seem early, but after 4 years of selling on etsy, I have finally gotten myself together enough to start getting my holiday gift listings up in a timely fashion. I have a few plans for patterns that are going to be my “production pieces” this Christmas season— meaning I’m going to keep making identical ones over and over as they sell— and so far, I have two of...

Jumbo yarnigans
At the request of my 3-year-old son, I made up two of my patterns in Lion Brand Wool-Ease thick and quick that we picked up on clearance at the local Hancock Fabrics. I followed the patterns pretty much as I had written them on size 10 needles. They turned out far more amazing than I could have imagined. There will definitely be more jumbo yarnigans in our future.

Norwegian Winter Doll
Improvised this doll over several days to submit to the Julia A. Purnell Museum in Snow Hill, MD for their annual Delmarva Needle Art Show. The doll’s body is crocheted from Cascade 220 on a size G hook. The clothes were knitted on size US 3 double pointed needles from various sock yarns, improvised from real patterns for children, with added fair isle accents. More pictures over at...
